BTC -- Better Than Clinton.
Unlike The Clenis, Dr. Howard Dean is a grown-up. He didn't enter politics until he had a better life than politics well-established. This is really a hobby, something he enjoys doing, and it shows.
He's also got Clinton's smarts, Clinton's precedent, and Clinton's principle of triangulation to draw on. Dana Blankenhorn | Email | Homepage | 11.04.03 - 1:29 pm | #

He sure seems to be enjoying himself. I can see where they originally got the "angry" label (the CA DNC speech in Feb., and his sternness during the debates), but as usual the press gets their first impression, echoes it out to every corner, then lazily keeps running the same theme. But all you gotta do is hang with Howard a little bit to see how much fun he's having. tencentlife | Email | Homepage | 11.04.03 - 1:59 pm | #

Personally I think that this attack would have hurt no one and that he shouldn't have said the bit about putting the confederate flag down.
This just ties in with my own experience (I live in South Carolina). But I think that the idea of saying that the Confederate flag is unimportant and that things like healthcare are important would help Dean even with the black community.
I'd say that because I had a speech class where a black woman said essentially the same thing as Dean. Terra | Email | Homepage | 11.04.03 - 3:31 pm | #

as i posted on another blog, i remember having a conversation (i believe it was with a dean national) about the confederate flag flying on the statehouse in south carolina. as a whitey, it embarrasses me. so i asked this black friend of mine what he thought, and he said that if southern whites want to continue to celebrate a lost war and a failed ideology, then that's their perogative. he then stated it didn't bother him and he had much more important things to worry about. i'd never thought baout it that way, and just wanted to bring it up one more time. anna | Email | Homepage | 11.04.03 - 3:58 pm | #

The whole flag thing. Dean is basically saying that he want to include everybody, including rednecks.
Kerry's retort was that he rather pick and choose the people to include like NAACP.
Dean rebuttle about putting the conferedate flag down was lame and took to a different direction to the initial meaning (my take at least). pfb | Email | Homepage | 11.04.03 - 4:30 pm | #

Not entirely OT: We must divide some of our effort to the Southern states. There has been letter writing campaigns to the first two primary states while the South is rising for Clark et al. I would like to find out Dean's familiarity numbers in the South. I know big crowds have turned out for the Gov. in Texas, but how do we do in Florida, Alabama etc. The rational behind the Rebel Flag comments was to appeal to Rednecks. Did it work? Here's a call to all Dean supporters; Reach out, Reach South! Write friends relatives and colleagues around the country. RM NYC | Email | Homepage | 11.04.03 - 6:59 pm | #
