The other night my parents received a call from Dean for America asking them to give $23 every 23rd day of the month. They agreed.
The funny thing is, just the day before that I had come up with what I thought was an original idea - a monthly web campaign asking supporters to "Give $25 (or more) on the 25th to Win Back America". An hourly icon like the "bat" would display a running total of how many people had given $25+, $50+, or $100+. I had drawn up a graphic of this and brought it to Dean headquarters - I guess they were underwhelmed since they already had the idea.
But I think a web campaign would very much enhance the phone campaign they are doing now. I think a web campaign which introduced a new icon each month (rather than the same old bat) would keep the appeal fresh-looking and engaging.
$25 times 100,000 donors would be $2.5 million; times 200,000 donors would be $5 million. That's certainly possible with a concerted web campaign by DFA. Rob in Vermont | Email | Homepage | 12.01.03 - 12:49 pm | #

PB - let me repeat what dana said earlier. what dean may or may not be hiding (and let's remember that it's STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE for presidential candidates to seal their recordss - bush 1/2 did it, reagan did, ad nauseum) is not nearly as terrible as what bush is doing in plain site. anna | Email | Homepage | 12.01.03 - 1:00 pm | #

For me, the hardest thing to do way back when was to donate for the first time. My first donation was $5 and it was a milestone. A lot of it was a mental hurdle of taking the first step to donating. Sure, the one time $50 donation is great, but a monthly repeat of that my be hard for some.
We need to make an outreach to folks who have never ever donated before. Ask them to donate $5 NOW. Once they see it is easy, they are more than likely to donate $10 to $15 each month until July in order to hit that $100 per person "Opting out" promise. Or even $5 a month if that is easier for them. These small amounts make a huge diference with many many many people behind them. This is early tangible participation.
The point is some people just need encouragement of taking baby steps. That first step for a non-politically active person is the hardest.
Are people asking you what you want for Xmas this year? How about asking them to donate $5 on your behalf and point them to your Dean Team page or Dean nation page?
Dean Nation folks, great job overall, but maybe we need a more active weekly fundraising update on the page to keep things fresh? Iowa cacauses are close and this quarter's deadline is closer. I am sure the regular visitors won't mind the money updates with things heating up. Two things that should be mentioned every week are -
1. WE WALKED AWAY FROM 19 MILLION DOLLARS! 2. Small donations are welcomed.
Ok. That's my rant for now. pfb | Email | Homepage | 12.01.03 - 4:50 pm | #

Not for 10 years; that is a very high number. Besides, it just does not square with his call for accountability. PB | Email | Homepage | 12.01.03 - 5:36 pm | #

You ever wonder that some people may donate directly on the DFA page, and not through DeanNation? psdem | Email | Homepage | 12.01.03 - 6:04 pm | #

PB: not for ten years? do you realise that the papers that were sealed were negotiated by vermont's attourney general rather than the gov? he didn't really have much say in what got sealed and what didn't. hell, bush sealed his gubernatorial records here in texas for eight years; that doesn't seem much different than what almost all the candidates do. besides, dean's record is public. there's all the coverage from the vermont papers, the laws on the books, etc etc. if you want to find out something about HD, all you have to do is look to the public record. there's nothing hidden in those papers, period.
i think it's funny that people keep waiting for the gasket to blow, for something -anything- to come out and stop dean. well face it; that is not going to happen. dean is clean, and bush isn't. anna | Email | Homepage | 12.02.03 - 1:06 pm | #
