If Gephardet doesn't kill this story quickly (and it doesn't look like he will), people are going to be remembering much more clearly his recent absences from the House during votes on important labor issues, I should think.

If she doesn't walk, not only will these guys support Dean, they may actively work to ruin Gephardt. Even if they avoid Missouri (fat chance, these guys are national), they can pour resources in other Feb 3rd states, in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa. Gephardt could quickly find that he could lose everywhere but Missouri. And with this threat, he might not get event that much.

This incident may well illustrate why Gephardt, despite opportunities, never moved up to Governor or Senator. She protects him so well that people elsewhere hate him too much to promote him to anything. I wonder if something similar didn't do in his 1988 run too. She got Gore, who wasn't ready then to run, but apparently never was able to stop Dukakis.
