I suspect most will be surprised when we all find out the exact total that Dean's campaign has raised. Just a hunch. Keep your eyes peeled this week when the rest of the media starts reporting on totals.

Gotta agree with you, Karl. I think the Dean camp will announce 3 million raised (though if he announced 2.5 I think most of us would jump for joy).

As a 3/28 house party host, my view is that Dean's support is deep but not widespread. Unlike Gore in 00 and the rest of the mediocre Dem pack, we have a great candidate and a struggling campaign that needs internet creativity, boundless energy, and deep dedication to get the word out fast and hard.

My guests were chafing at the bit to get going, and frustrated that they couldn't do more. We've got to get our heads together, soon.

I don't expect a significant upside surprise in Dean's fundraising this quarter. I am hoping for an excellent second quarter, however.

Every penny we raise is critical to the campaign. This won't be a cakewalk like Iraq. Er... sorry. Bad example.

Well, I am hoping that he get more endorsements from folks from this and whatever he finally reports shows that he is a contender especially if most of the money comes from the average joe/jane like us instead of deep pockets. I know if it looks like he is taken seriously, I am going to donate a lot more next quarter... ...maybe put start putting aside now. It's hard to save money for us poor folks especially with the state of the economy. I have started to network and bug friends and family. Maybe by the next earnings dead line, it will no longer be Howard who?

I expect he'll have more donors than any of the other candidates by a long shot and that will be at least a big part of the story. I also suspect he will raise far more than his stated goal.

As one small effort in a Vermont town of 1100 active voters, my goal is to establish an email list of 200 households (about 400 people) and try to generate a modest contribution from those people each quarter to keep the ball rolling and the momentum growing. I'm off to the Meetup in Burlington tonight to encourage others to do the same.

If you want to start action, start holding meetings now with your core group. Go after your teachers groups/unions, GLBT groups, HRC, Women's rights and caucuses, You have to start now. Start going to their meetings, take Dean supporters with you. WE are the Dean campaign to these people, it's up to us to take the message there. We can't sit back and wait for VT to do it all alone. We need a multi-lateral approach

We have a group from MA going to the New Hampshire Convention on the 5th. Anyone in or around Boston or MA should carpool with us if you can Join the massfordean list for more info.

Also, remember that Dean's individual contributions might be more matchable than the other candidate's. This doesn't make 1.5 into 7.4, but it's worth more than the money to have lots of little donations (they can give again, it shows more widespread support, it shows the campaign can effectively use the internet)

I challenge everyone to do what I am doing. For the past two and half months I have donated $25.01 twice a month, each time I get paid. It's not a lot, but if all of us did that it would add up very quickly.

3 Points - 1) The campaign should use the enormous success of Meetup to promote a commitment from everyone to a minimum online donation of $25 a month. Its affordable to most of us and in most cases will be matchable. 11,500 current meetup folks times $25, times two (in most cases) = $575,000 a month current potential.

2) Getting a committment from folks to donate a fixed amount into the near future allows the campaign to plan accordingly. I recently recieved a campaign solicitation to committ to $100 a month for the next three months. Considering the amounts I've already donated, that may be a little rich for me, however, they stressed that it would allow them to, as I said, plan in the near term. Get people to commit to affordable fixed amounts over time.

3) The scoop I have is that although the other camps may be raising more at the moment, they are also burning their cash at a much faster rate than Mr. frugal - I fly coach on Southwest Dean. This is huge and can't be underestimated. The more we donate our free time, our computer useage, and our homes, the less Dean spends now. Why is that important - the Federal matching funds won't kick in until the 1st week of January 04, that on top of what Dean can retain in "Cash on Hand" at the end of 4th quarter 03 will determine if he has the "legs" to stand a national campaign...not in Iowa or New Hampshire, but by the 3rd and 4th weeks of February 04, and of course by March 2, 04 - Super Tuesday.

I agree that Dean is Mr. Frugal. As somebody who has worked on both 'poor' and 'rich' campaigns I can assure you the $ spent last quarter will be a part of the story as well. It will be interesting to see how much Dean's opponents burned on the 'travel/lodging' category and the 'consultants' category.

I'm really hoping he has the largest # of donors. I think he will, and I think the second quarter will become really impressive.

Can someone tell me the following: when the FEC report comes out does it say the number of donors, or does it just give a total. What is the report like?
