I met Don Beyer at a Dean fundraiser, and he's one of the nicest people I've ever met. He ran a principled campaign for governor of Virginia in 1997 against Republican Jim Gilmore. Gilmore based his whole campaign on repeal of the car tax, which was a major source of education and road funding for the state. Gilmore won, and now Virginia is basically bankrupt, ranking 47th among states in spending for college education. Beyer lost that election, but he told the truth about the consequences of a tax cut based on folly.
