International fame for Howard: |

I would be very, very careful about bringing Mickey Kaus into the Dean camp. He's basically a closet conservative (although he fancies himself an "independent") who regularly goes out of his way to bash Paul Krugman, and who, during the 2000 election, took up a lot of space in Slate rambling on about how he just couldn't choose between Bush and Gore. I'm pretty sure he ended up voting for Bush, but I'm not 100% certain. Anyway, I don't think he's not so much a Dean-supporter, than a Kerry-hater. |

You're right, Kaus does not seem to be a big fan of John Kerry. From what I remember, he doesn't like the way Kerry tries to play both sides of the same issue (as if most politicians don't do this). Kaus is also obsessed with welfare reform - he tries to embarras anyone who warned about the 1996 act and constantly tries to show how much the act has improved the lives of those on welfare. So, Kaus may like Dean a little for doing welfare reform in his own state before Clinton did it in 96. |
