And make that tent one size larger - I was at the fundraiser in NY last night and Dean explained that they're looking to form a group called Republicans for Dean. Awesome. There must be a huge chunk of the Republican party that is socially liberal, fiscally conservative and mad as hell at Bush. This could be a very big tent indeed. This is just the Grist Magazine interview we saw earlier. Might want to make a note of that.
Alternet rarely has original work, they're sort of like Utne Reader, except without the editorials. Luke Francl | Email | Homepage | 06.04.03 - 5:25 pm | #

They should do a Libertarians for Dean and Independents for Dean. Luke Francl | Email | Homepage | 06.04.03 - 5:25 pm | #

Driving an SUV in Vermont, the most rural state in the country, makes a little bit more sense than it does in places like suburban Chicago and Atlanta. Patience | Email | Homepage | 06.04.03 - 5:57 pm | #

Good grief... an SUV is a legit vehicle for a family car. It's the singles that wouldn't be caught dead with a child in their car/lives that drive them to work solo every day that are the problem.
Other than that... an excellent interview that should make all the Greens but the most extreme Earth Firsters happy... and nothing would make them happy but returning humanity to a non-technological hunter-gatherer society anyway. A.F. Smith | Email | Homepage | 06.04.03 - 6:08 pm | #

I plan on starting Greens for Dean once I get back to Portland, OR. I just had my first meetup experience with two other people in Lancaster PA (GOP stronghold) and a reporter from the local paper. The reporter kept dropping her objectivity to say things like "I totally agree with you". I don't know if her liberal bias will sway anybody in this town but at least she'll spread the Deanmeme. That reminds me of one of the earliest stories I heard about Dean. As a fellow recyclomaniac -- I compost in Manhattan! -- I was sold then and there...
The devotion to recycling? Wonderful. The ability to laugh at himself? Priceless. Mrs. Monsky | Email | Homepage | 06.04.03 - 9:34 pm | #

Meetup tonight was priceless too. A great group, a campaign rep. (Heidi) and allot of enthusiasm. Stayed much longer than I planned - because the discussions were so heated and interesting. All bodes well for the good doctor. Ken L. | Email | Homepage | 06.04.03 - 10:02 pm | #

Dante Scala takes the DLC to task for wrong information in this piece at PoliticsNH.com:http:
//www.politicsnh.com/scala/index.shtml
An excerpt relevant to Dean:
"It turns out that these two leaders of the moderate wing of the Democratic Party [From and Reed] were engaged in some myth-making (or, perhaps more to the point, wishful thinking) of their own. According to exit polls, 54 percent of Democratic primary voters identified themselves as liberals. DLCers are hoping that “undeclared” voters, who are unaffiliated with either major party and often labeled “independents,” will invade the Democratic presidential primary and exert a salutary, moderate influence on the outcome – a surprisingly strong showing by John Edwards or Joe Lieberman, perhaps, as opposed to an upset by Howard Dean. The 2000 primary numbers, however, indicate that From and Reed significantly exaggerate the size and strength of this “moderate invasion.”" Nonpartisan for Dean | Email | Homepage | 06.04.03 - 11:14 pm | #

I think Independents for Dean is an absolute must and will do whatever is needed to run with the ball on this. Scott G. Medford, MA | Email | Homepage | 06.05.03 - 8:40 am | #
