Hey everyone - Dean will be on C-SPAN's "Road to the White House" at 6:30 and 9:30 EST along with Kerry and Gephardt in Linn County Iowa. Could be a great comparative piece and fire up those undecided about Dean. Matt G. | Email | Homepage | 01.19.03 - 8:22 am | #

When are we Democrats going to remember that accomodating Bush led to the disasters this past November. Only when Mary Landrieu woke up, changed course and stood up to Bush did she save her Senate seat. Go Howard Dean. I thought Carlson handled this piece fairly well, except for the sucker punch at the end revealing (if it is to be believed) that Dean called back to recant using the word "racist." But why is Tucker Carlson, nit-wit, young nerd of the right, writing such a piece? Where are Democratic opinion writers? Did the "liberal" NY Times even look for one? Carlson would never have ended a GOP piece with such a low blow. David Balog | Email | Homepage | 01.19.03 - 1:32 pm | #

Does this come off as a little too harsh? Of course it does. Tucker Carlson wrote it to come off as too harsh--that is his signature style. He is trying to make Dean look like a nutjob novelty candidate who could never appeal to moderate suburbanites. That last bit where Dean calls him to recant a statement is a means of "showing" that Dean will hide his "true self" (which Tucker has just painted as rather extreme by midddle-of-the-road standards) by trying to appear moderate. Tucker Carlson is rhetorically cheap and dishonest--and he's rather proud of being rhetorically cheap and dishonest. The good news for Dean is that TC thinks he's enough of a threat that he needs to be smeared. FHC | Email | Homepage | 01.19.03 - 1:49 pm | #

tucker boytie carlson is an idiot. whenever he appears on crossfire, i mute the remote because he whines like a 3 year old.
the nyt under raines has gone to the dogs. i canceled my home delivery after they endorsed the stealth gov of ny for the third time. as for getting liberal writers, they seem to have taken some of the "liberal" criticism thrown at them by the rabid wingnuts to heart as did cnn.
looking forward to seeing dean tonight. william, at least dean has ideas and a spine which is more than you can say about 99% of the politicians in dc. ariella | Email | Homepage | 01.19.03 - 1:59 pm | #

I thought Tucker's story about Dean was not a low blow but rather an honest description of how politics works. After all, he also told the story of Bush's utter incompetence early on in the presidential race--didn't Bush change his ways too? Tucker doesn't say this directly, but it's not hard to see the connection between the Dean story and the Bush story. Tucker may have unwittingly (or even wittingly) implied that, just as Bush was electable, Dean is electable.
Don't get too riled up about a quote in the Times magazine more than a year before the election. There is time for moving around. Let Dean develop. Everthing I have read indicates that he is a principled and honest politician. Just because he listens to his advisors and friends doesn't make him a bad candidate.
On another note, in defense of the New York Times, they may not always be as straightforward as I would like, or as progressive as I am, but to say that they can't find liberal writers is misleading. I encourage you to go back and read Micheal Ignatif's article in the Magazine one or two weeks ago. It was a provocative and highly critical piece about war in Iraq and the "American Empire" from one of the nations most intelligent, persuasive, and ostensibly "liberal" scholars. ben | Email | Homepage | 01.19.03 - 3:58 pm | #

So what if Dean called TC back and softened his words? Remember that TC interviewed the current White House occupant in 1999, and in that interview GW mocked Karla Faye Tucker, a woman awaiting execution on Texas' death row. 'Please don't kill me, please don't kill me' GW said, mocking Tucker's voice and her Christian supporters who were stidently campaigning for her sentence to be commuted. If a party could nominate a man who mocked a woman on death row, surely we as Democrats can nominate a man who says what we all think but only wants to soften his words. I don't think this article will hurt Dean and it may even help him. God knows it's refreshing to hear someone speak his mind.
Nevertheless, do not imagine for a second that TC was attempting to help Dean. He wrote a reductio ad absurdum of the man's positions on controversial topics. Are those statements accurate--yes. Are those statements reasonable when put into context--absolutely. But TC very carefully left that context out. Chances are, it won't work because people will judge Dean as they see him outside of this article and because TC is not half as clever as he thinks he is. Why is "Full of liars" in quotes? Dean didn't say that. He said Republicans are "pretty bankrupt Intellectually" and conservaties are not "intellectually honest" but neither of those mean "full of liars."
I agree with THC, Carlson is manipulating the facts, just like he does on Crossfire. David | Email | Homepage | 01.19.03 - 7:01 pm | #

Could'nt agree more with FHC! I've seen Dean interviewed 3 or 4 times but tonight on C-Span was the first time I've seen him give a speech. I must say, compared to the bland mush speeches that Kerry and Gephardt gave, Dean was most impressive. He needs alittle refinement, but this is the guy that will make you WANT to go out and vote for. Did anyone catch how he co-opted Gephardt on the question of universal health care coverage, he thanked Gephardt for "joining him" in calling for universal coverage. I think the other candidates may try to grab on to his signiture issue and play "me too". Matt G. | Email | Homepage | 01.19.03 - 9:29 pm | #

I just watched the speech on cspan. Do we dare to hope for an honest candidate? I found Dean to be straightforward honest and it felt good just to listen to someone say my feelings out loud, especially someone running for office. I hope we all remember that this guy is going to need all of us to help with money as well as by spreading the word. Being from Michigan I had not heard a thing about him before but tonight I will be heading for his web sight to donate. Kathy S | Email | Homepage | 01.19.03 - 9:42 pm | #

i need to fix a typo in my earlier post- it s/b "bowtie" not "boytie".
yea, fhc, dean rocked. i told a few friends to watch him on c-span and when i woke up this morning, i found a voicemail from a friend who is a district leader in my county that said, "thank god you taped it". we can use this! hopefully, he will make a contribution and will be joining the meet up group with me.
ben, thank you for the heads up on the ignatif article. i have some magazines stacked up and i'll look for that one. i still get the sunday times since a habit is difficult to break. mediawhoresonline has a campaign against the times because christopher caldwell reviewed a book based on karl goering kove. it's a repeat of the w/p having another wingnut review david brock's book last year.

FHC where did you find the stumbles?
I thought the speach was perfect, every word. And every idea he put forth excited me.
All of you get on the bandwagon and endorse this "Ray of Hope" for our party. Send a campaign donation if you can! We must get behind him and make sure everyone knows who he is and what he stands for...
I asked him to please be our mouthpeice for the next two years, because we have felt so defeated without a VOICE.... Lucinda | Email | Homepage | 01.22.03 - 4:16 pm | #

Tucker Carlson is such a bigot! I got so tired of him and Novak sneering and making snide comments re: the Reverends, Sharpton and Jackson, so I finally started posting it in all the forums and message boards that I thought these two should be fired for their racist attitude. Soon after, they quit doing it. Those two are so offensive and pretty representative of the Republican party and its racism. Lucinda | Email | Homepage | 01.22.03 - 4:28 pm | #

Hi Lucinda,
The stumbles were a few garbled sentences and some mangled words--the kind of thing one would expect when the speaker is not working from a script. In some ways, I think that that added to the impact of his speech. He was speaking extemporaneously--how many pols do that anymore?
The content of his speech was electric, and he completely stole the show. Great stuff! FHC | Email | Homepage | 01.23.03 - 12:31 pm | #

Finally, someone noticed the emporer has no clothes and there is no such thing in medical practice as partial birth abortion. I've been so confused. I was nurse manager in labor and delivery for over 15 years in a major medical center and I never heard of this procedure. I just couldn't understand why no one else was saying "there is no such procedure." I do know of a procedure that sounds something like this that could be used (I never saw it) to deliver a dead baby if it would save a mother a surgery to deliver a dead baby.

I've lived in a neighboring state (NH) to Vermont and I've met Governor Dean on one occasion in the past. I'm extremely pleased he is running for president in 2004. He is clearly an "outside the beltway guy" who is going to draw a lot of parallels with Senator John McCain for his straight talking, no-nonense speeches. I entertained the notion of supporting Senator John Kerry, but after Kerry blew it with his vote to support "Bush Wars" I've switched to Governor Dean. He is the man for America in 2004.
