Ho-Ho is his affectionate nickname in Vermont, from what I understand. It's a term of endearment.
Much like both supporters and detractors of Bush call him "Dubya." Joey Dee | Email | Homepage | 01.23.03 - 2:26 pm | #

Joey Dee, Ah, I see. Didn't know that. All I could think of when I read Ho-Ho was the snack cake.
When I lived in Texas (my home state), I always thought of Bush Jr. as "the Shrub." FHC | Email | Homepage | 01.23.03 - 3:03 pm | #

FHC, trust me, most of us still think of GWB as "Shrub".
I will hunt around for the NARAL speech link... anna | Email | Homepage | 01.23.03 - 3:56 pm | #

What does everyone think of the NARAL speeches? Here's my take.
Edwards: lightweight. Looks like he's 25. Pretty good, but nothing too attention-getting.
Sharpton: good at speeches. A fine showing.
Lieberman: Solid. Not as much energy-- Sharpton's hard to follow, too. But he was just fine.
Gephardt: Convincing story, I thought. Also pretty good.
Dean: Looks very handsome after Lieberman and Gephardt. Nice fresh start about extremism. Former Planned Parenthood boardmember, and a doctor. Fresh take on partial-birth as well, I think it was effective. Very strong! I like how he avoided saying the same old things and instead told people new things.
Kerry: Gravitas, very convincing. Also quite good.
Dean wins in many ways. He's fiestiest, had the most original things to say, has doctor and governor credentials-- concrete things to cite, quite an effective speaker. And cutest, by far, I think.
Kerry's a close second-- I thought that in the Idaho speeches too.
I also think that these events with multiple candidates favor the lesser-knows, getting them publicity they otherwise wouldn't have. They can all attract undecideds, but only the unknowns can really take away supporters from others. In general. anandla | Email | Homepage | 01.23.03 - 8:02 pm | #

"Ho Ho" has a specific origin. When Dr. and Gov. Dean was beginning his political journey (which will take him to the White House, shocking the world), a woman politician was his "mentor" of sorts after Dean won his first election, to the Vermont State Senate, I believe. This woman called Dean "Ho Ho Ho" as a term of endearment because of his bustling energy and smarts. I guess it's been shortened to "Ho Ho." Let's not let this get turned into a negative by the media. "Ho Ho" is part of the charm, the universal positive impression this man has on everyone. It fits well with the story of finishing a check-up on a patient before driving to be inaugurated Governor after Snelling's death in 1991. DaveG | Email | Homepage | 01.24.03 - 12:59 am | #

Dear Governor Dean,
Good luck in your run for President 2004. I have an idea that could have an enormous impact on that quest.
I believe the candidate that embraces the signature issue of an energy policy will win the race. America has to create an energy structure that reduces consumption, stimulates the economy, dramatically improves the environment and one that doesn't compromise every foreign policy decision this country makes. The Bush Administration isn't going to do it. Their energy policy is tax cuts to purchase SUV's. Your fellow Democratic candidates aren't going to rock the boat. You're the only one who could make it happen.
Good luck in your campaign.
