04/25/2002 Archived Entry: "Bush and Gore & the environment"

Morris, surprisingly, writes a good piece on how Al Gore loses Presidential election, Al Gore finally gets it right.

I think Gore is actually much better suited to run as an outsider, and that Bush will be hampered running on an actual record, especially in regards to the environment. The recent ANWAR vote, 54-46 against, showed what the politicians read in the polls-- it doesn't pay to be on the wrong side of the environmental vote. The 6 weeks CFR law that bans ads from special interest parties will likely be thrown out in the courts, which is a good thing too. The Sierra Club makes the environment a top issue in the campaigns at that time, whereas, otherwise, the politicians wouldn't be even talking about it. What was also interesting with ANWAR was how the atempt of Rove/Bush to wedge the issue between the environmentalists and the unions failed. I believe that this was partly due to the defeat of any new CAFE standards. Each side won one of the battles dealing with protectionism, and each side lost on an issue they tried to advance. So nothing has changed, and that means there is not blood in the water between the two Democratic constituencies.
