05/01/2002 Archived Entry: "Oregon Gov race"

Here's the followup on the Oregon Governor race, with the details of the poll I mentioned yesterday:

RACE EVENS STATEWIDE, STEIN LEADS IN EUGENE
New Poll Shows Stein Closes On Kulongoski

New polling conducted over the weekend shows the race for Governor on the Democratic side is tightening up. The latest numbers show Bev Stein at 21%, Jim Hill at 21%, and Ted Kulongoski at 26%, with 32% undecided. The poll of 400 likely Democratic primary voters was conducted this past weekend by the Washington DC firm Penn Shoen Berland for the Stein campaign and has a margin of error of 4.9%.

In polling conducted in early April, support for Kulongoski was at 34%. He’s dropped 8 points in four weeks, for a total drop of 18 points since last November when he topped out at 44%. Meanwhile, Stein climbed from 8% to 21% for a total gain of 13 points since November. It is significant to note that while Hill’s numbers improved from 14% in early April to 21% today, his new support came directly from voters previously supporting Kulongoski.

More good news for Stein: Polling reveals she is now winning in Eugene. Her support among Eugene supporters is 25% with Kulongoski at 21% and Hill at 15%, with 38% undecided.
