05/10/2002 Archived Entry: "McCain & Kerry"
It seems to have always been in the background, Kerry's and McCain's alliance, and it will be interesting to hear any comments they might make about this at some point. I'd commented on the Boston article earlier. Now, Orvetti points to a quote that McCain shouted, "Kerry for President!" That's typical McCain, saying things off the cuff. But McCain, all but told Gore in 2000 that selecting Kerry would mean he was half-supportive of the Democratic ticket. It makes us wonder... Still, I haven't seen Kerry, or Edwards for that matter, moving out from under the sub-5% domain. All this is mute until that occurs. However, McCain (The Big Switch, Why John McCain is the Democrats' best hope, McCain Switch? Please.) might just have a clear shot at the Democratic nomination:

In a hypothetical run through the 2004 primaries, going by just these criteria, McCain fares extremely well. He'd probably lose Iowa, but the rest of the short calendar is a pure plus for him. He'd win the open primaries in New Hampshire and South Carolina a week later and, with the new cluster of front-loaded primaries, face a quick succession of open-primary states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona. A series of early wins could easily set off a domino effect, giving McCain tremendous--possibly unstoppable--momentum through the decisive early challenges.
