05/23/2002 Archived Entry: "Oregon Results"
I just finished Oregon voters sweep out the Republicans, an article on the Oregon primary results. The campaign is already starting pretty ugly, and not likely to get much better:
Mannix charged that his opponent in the fall governor's race represents the "same old, same old Democratic liberalism" while Kulongoski declared that his rival is "not in the mainstream" and would launch a "campaign of fear."
Kulongoski is now meeting with Saxton's backers, and saying that --though Mannix (like Simon in CA against Davis) will want to avoid social issues in the general-- abortion, gay rights and physician-assisted suicide will be main issues in the campaign. "It's going to be a good debate about Oregon, the public is going to get a clear choice."

This is certainly good news, Mydd. I look forward to Governor Kulongoski, and perhaps Senator Bradbury as well. Keep up the good work in Oregon, and I'll do mine in New Jersey. Another Republican-paid poll came out today on the Maine Senate race, showing Collins up 51-21. That's a 5 point gain for Pingree and a 4-point loss for Collins. Do you think a non-partisan poll will show this closer?

Cook still has this as "likely Republican." I will be watching for when he moves it to "lean" soon.
This is the 3rd poll out, Strategic Marketing had in there first poll:
Initial W/Leans
Collins 55% 66%
Pingree 16 23
Undec. 12
There was also this recent poll:
An RKM Research and Communications poll, conducted 5/6-8/02 for WCSH-TV, WLBZ-TV, and the Bangor Daily News, surveyed 410 likely voters; margin of error +/- 4.9% (Bangor Daily News, 5/15). Tested: Sen. Susan Collins (R) and former state Sen. Majority Leader Chellie Pingree (R).
General election matchup:
Collins 63%
Pingree 23
So, that recent 51-21 poll, I would guess it's without leans. I wonder if the leans have changed at all. Carter's campaign is going to work toward Pingree's benefit as well.

The Oregon Senate race would be determined by coattails. No, not President Bush's coattails but the governor's coattails. A huge win by the Democrat (15%) would mean that Bradbury could win in a close race. Similarly the margin for Baldacci would determine whether Pinegree could pull it off. I personally think that the Democrats should portray the spector of right wing judicial nominees getting confirmed if Collins wins. Why? A vote for Collins is a vote for Trent Lott and people like Robert Bork, Charles Pickering, Priscilla "the Enron" Owen and other right wing judicial activists.

Here's a great run-down on the Gov race in OR, and Washington cunty, which it mentions, is where the tight legislative races are that will decide control:

Great news about Mannix -- the Democrats cheered when he pulled it off. Shades of Simon/Riordan.
I've been frustrated by the lack of "buzz" so far about the U.S. Senate race here. We need to get active to get Bradbury elected. Gordon Smith is too conservative for most Oregonians, I'm convinced. However, we have to overcome apathy and ignorance to get momentum shifted into his favor. To help the Democrats put up a firewall against Bush's destructive policies, please contribute to the Bradbury campaign -- and, no, I'm not "with" them ;).

Domain Names Revealed Terror Attacks
From mid-June to mid-July 2000, at least seventeen Internet
domain names were registered which indicated when and where the
attacks were to occur. Among the Web addresses:
“attackontwintowers.com,” “nycterroriststrike.com,”
“pearlharborinmanhattan.com,” “terrorattack2001.com,”
“worldtradetowerattack.com,” and “wterroristattack2001.com.”
Unfortunately, the names were allowed to expire, so tracking the
people who bought them may not be easy....

I'm glad to see that other Bush critics recognize that Sens. Smith and Collins are vulnerable in Oregon and Maine. Both are moderate to liberal states won by Gore despite strong Nader showings. Smith is a conservative and Collins is a self-proclaimed moderate who has backed Bush on key votes. Bradbury and Pingree have the domestic issues alone in their favor, so it is now their races to lose.
