Alabama primary results

Alabama Governor Primaries
I could sense that Riley was pulling away from Windom, and put him up quite a bit that the toss-up this looked like a month ago, but Riley romped in this race. Bishop gets the poor loser award for the evening, jumping ship from the Democrats after getting stomped by the "Siegelman machine"--what did he expect, to win? I'll pay attention to these Alabama pollsters next time, who got it pretty much on the spot. Riley vs Siegelman is a toss-up race, one which I've been leaning towards Riley, this will be a very competitive race.

GOP Gov Results:
Riley 138,298 73%
Windom 34,981 18%
James 16,463 9%

Dem Gov Results:
Siegelman 208,010 74%
Bishop 57,940 20%
Other 17,000 6%

Democratic US Senate Primary
The Democratic primary for the US Senate was totally unpredictable. I had gotten a very well written e-mail telling me how Parker was going to win the primary, which I didn't heed. The latest poll showed
over 50% undecided, with a toss-up, and a lot of upward movement for McPhillips from the previous poll. Parker, the State Auditor, did really well, considering she was outspent by McPhillips by at least 10x. She started off way behind Sessions, 55-22% in the latest non-partisan poll, from February. Parker failed to clear 50% though, so a run-off with McPhillips will occur, still a toss-up.

Dem Senate Results:
Parker 150179 48%
McPhillips 130050 42%
Sowell 30202 10%

Yesterday's Predictions:

GOP Gov:
Riley 52
Windom 32
James 16

Dem Gov:
Siegelman 75
Bishop 17
Others 8

Senate Dem:
McPhillips 52
Parker 40
others 8

House District 3
Rogers (R) and Turnham (D) advance without runoff

Rep. Earl Hilliard getting forced into a run-off is big news. The only other race I've been following in Alabama is the US 3rd District House seat, which was opened up by Riley running for Governor, and have written about the likely race, predicted above, 05/02/2002 Archived Entry: "US House: TX 5th, AL 3rd-- Two Toss-ups that Slight Lean Dem, and why." . The primary totals confirm this, even with Riley running for Governor in a competitive race, that this has a lean toward Turnham. Here were the results:

Democrat:
Joe Turnham 30,488 53%
Gerald Willis 22,372 39%
Willie Burnett 5,148 8%

Republican:
Mike Rogers 24,741 75%
Jason Dial 4,273 13%
Jeff Fink 3,774 12%

Riley probably knocks off Siegelman and the margin of his victory may prove decisive in CD-3, although there are more African Americans now. Alabama has only produced crazies for governor recently..George Wallace, Fob James and now Siegeleman. Either they all are bigots and associated with bigoted groups or they are crooked to the core. We need not go to Third World to check out corruption...Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana would do and Texas is sort of a borderline case.
