07/03/2002 Archived Entry: "Bush and corporate scandal, trifecta"
As was noted in Rove's powerpoint display, the scandals of Enron, the sorry stock prices, and the lagging economic recovery hadn't yet worked to sink Bush's poll standings. That's probably changing now, and Krugman's article certainly reinforces the image of 2/3rds of those polled in the recent Pew Poll, that said Bush isn't doing all he could for an economic recovery.
Krugman, (Still, even a poll-induced epiphany is welcome. But it probably isn't genuine) with Everyone Is Outraged, effectively created a left-alone story from long ago, into a relevant news item for today. And the background work has already been done, with Royce's Bush’s Insider Connections Preceded Huge Profit On Stock Deal, and Bush Violated Security Laws Four Times, SEC Report Says. After the article comes out and questions are asked, Bush Defends His Business Tenure. However, that's not the end of the story, because even more questions are raised while Bush's Corporate Record is Examined.
The SEC eventually closed its investigation of Bush without taking action against him, although The Dallas Morning News has quoted a 1993 letter from the SEC to Bush's lawyer emphasizing that its decision "must in no way be construed as indicating that (Bush) has been exonerated." ..."These types of late filings are not out of the ordinary," Bartlett told The Washington Post in Wednesday's editions. "It would be like doing a 60 in a 55" speed-limit zone, he said.
The original WH spin was to have Bush come out the week after July 4th, with some sort of "no more business as usual" announcement, that will make sure that this stays in the news, at least the background.
I thought I'd heard the trifecta thing said before... turns out it was Al Gore.
