07/10/2002 Archived Entry: "Fans Strike!"
The Daily Kos cuts the MLB some slack, that's cause Kos gets cheap tickets. I'm in the top-tier mk't area, and side with Craig on this one, who has some harsh zingers. Besides, as Broder notes, the Cubbies are done for the season, except for maybe another strike (it's the fans who ought to strike), it's all over. Now, that's something Bush might give a flip about, maybe. No, Texas is in dead last again, 15 games out. The real game this year for Dubya is control of the Senate and the House.

If I was a Giants fan, I might be more annoyed. Hard to beat $8 A's tickets.
Still, despite my many gripes with MLB itself, I do defend the decision to end the All-Star game on a tie. I just think the pennant race is more important than a glorified exhibition game. Imagine the outcry out of Seattle had Torre pushed Garcia for 7 innings, perhaps costing them a game. As an A's fan, I wouldn't have minded. As a baseball fan, it wouldn't have been fair. The integrity of the regular season is more important than a game that counts for nothing much.
If we want to critique MLB for being a den of corrupt, greedy, aloof, disconnected tyrants, then I'll join the chorus. But the outcry right now is about the All-Star game, and on that score, I'll defend MLB.
As for the Cubs, just wait 'till next year. And the one after that... and so on.

I don't think the Seattle fans would have minded one bit if Garcia shut down the NL for 9 innings straight. It was the NL that had the bigger problems, not as big as Bush's though.
