07/19/2002 Archived Entry: "Convention cities"

Republicans searching for a place to set their 2004 nominating convention plan to visit New Orleans, New York and Tampa-St. Petersburg during the week of Aug. 4. The Republican National Committee's site selection committee will continue to review bids from Boston and Miami, before deciding whether to travel to more cities. The RNC accepted convention proposals from all five in mid-June and has been reviewing those proposals. Democrats are considering proposals by Detroit, Boston, Miami and New York. Both parties expect to announce their convention cities late this fall, probably after the elections.

I can't imagine that the Republicans will choose Tampa-St. Petersburg, why, because of the freeway? Given that I think Jeb is going to get beaten, that will make it even less likely. And it looks like the RNC is giving Boston the stiff arm. It looks like New Orleans, but with a bout of fall patriotism, NYC could again become the presumptive GOP site.

For the Democrats, it's coming down to Florida. Especially because Bush is going to lose in 2002, providing even more of a reason to spotlight the state, with Miami the choice.

Jeb Bush is going to win? I don't think so.

How is McBride doing in polls against Jeb? What about their fundraising? I really hope Reno loses the Dems primary. She cannot beat Bush. Too many enemies.

For the Dems it has to be either Detroit or Maimi, of those four. Boston and NYC are in Dem "lock" states. Makes no sense to go there. Miami could be great fun!

Jeb is going to lose? While I would dearly love to see that happen, I'm not seeing it. I would love to see your analysis on the issue. Thanks!

Here's what I wrote earlier:

McBride vs. Bush
McBride 31%
Bush 49%
Don't Know 20%

The incumbent is below 50%, the challenger has 9% negatives. The challenger is unknown by 49% of the voters, and his first commercials roll out this month. The challenger's primary opponent has 100% name ID, less than 50% support, and an unfavorable rating of 48%.

-----------------------------------

I think you'll see McBride jump way up in the polls over the next month, with advertising out. Reno doesn't even have the money to do ads, her campaign is weak. Jeb Bush is like his brother, way over-rated.

McBride's TV ads must be good, the GOP is complaining:
