07/23/2002 Archived Entry: "Bush's Depression"
It's about time I read someone who takes Dubya to task, The Boom or Bush Cycle.
The Bushes' contempt for government regulation of capitalism has allowed corporate piracy to drive the nation toward financial ruin. The American public now stares in disbelief as our infamous boom-Bush cycle wreaks havoc on its retirement plans and endangers its jobs. Meanwhile, yet another President George seeks to distract us with patriotic-sounding gibberish.
"I believe people have taken a step back and asked, 'What's important in life?' " said the president two weeks ago in Minneapolis. "You know, the bottom line and this corporate America stuff--is that important? Or is serving your neighbor, loving your neighbor like you'd like to be loved yourself?"
Consider the deep cynicism of that statement from a president who spent most of his adult life milking that "corporate America stuff" for all it was worth, just as his super-rich ancestors had always done.
Like father, like son. Expect a war soon? It would be so cynical. I doubt they will attempt anything large scale, but a covert CIA hit would fit the wag. If it works, they hit the wires with it. If not, the news is covered over.

MyDD: I wouldn't put it past the Bush administration to launch even a full-scale war timed strategically to impact the Nov. elections. I'm also expecting them to trumpet some fake or trumped-up terrorism scare...Hmmm...I can just picture Junior with James Baker and Poppy sitting around the fake ranch stage set in Crawford, pondering their October surprise options.

I see that Bush is falling in the polls, with at least a couple of polls putting him in the 60's. If the Democrats can keep the pressure on with the corporate scandals, Bush could even hit the 50's. Let's just remember, Bush would be low 50's, possibly even low 40's if not for September 11. Only two and a half more years with Bush as President. In these 18 months, I have forgotten how it feels to have a President smarter than most of my neighbors.

It depends on whether Bush wants to save his job or whether he wants the GOP to save their jobs in the House. If Bush starts a war with Iraq now, the stocks would go down sharply in the medium term but would divert attention in the short term and help the GOP in control of the House and perhaps retake the Senate. However, in the medium term (next year) it would take further toll on the economy and Bush would end up loosing his job. So, in his own self interest, it would be good if he looks at the bigger picture and does not start anything until next year.

I expect an attack on Iraq. will happen come fall right before the elections. Democrats would be wise to point out that Bush would be starting a war and putting US lives in danger for political gain.

An article in one of the British papers yesterday, says that the governement is calling up 20-30,000 reserves in September.
It looks like an Iraqi invasion is eminnent.

Like I said, Bush can ruin his chances in 2004 by helping the GOP House through an invasion of Iraq or he can save his skin and attack Iraq next year or in 2004. But, GW was never known for his intellect.

I don't see any invasion of Iraq before 2003 at the earliest. Arab nations are opposed to it, Turkey insists on a bunch of cash for its acquiescence, and in Europe only Britain might support it. Going at it alone will limit domestic support and magnify the risks of the operation.
Reports indicate dissident groups are too weak to use effectively as they were in Afghanistan, indicating a limited effort to support a rebellion would likely end up as a "Bay of Goats" scenario. Efforts to support rebels after the Gulf war failed and hurt our credibility.
In terms of what effect Congressional control will have in 2004, I don't think Bush has a good choice. Full GOP control would bring the need for Democratic counterbalance in 2004. Split control would mean he would continue to be ineffective. Democratic control would leave Bush as the counterbalance but open him up to inquiry into 9/11 failures and business scandals.

Dick Morris: The Coming GOP Extinction....
dont think it is going to happen the way he says...however, here is an issue that a Dem Congress and a Bush Presidency can work on without too many fights and claim victory. But, the right wing bigots in his party such as Tancredo and Jo Ann Emerson would oppose the move.

The Civil Rights Commission on the possible internment of Arab Americans:
http://www.freep.com/news/metro/civil20_20020720.htm
But, would the GOP intern Sunnunu, Issa, LaHood, Spencer Abraham and others in their party first, including a possible Senate candidate Terrell (Louisiana) and half the "white" population of Louisiana including AG Ieyoub?

For all his incompetence, Harvey Pitt wants a promotion and a raise. The guy is being attacked on all sides...he probably has the lowest IQ in the administration.
