COLORADO: Strickland Shows Momentum in New Poll
A poll for KUSA/TV 9 News in Denver taken in July has the media talking. “The Allard-Strickland (poll) numbers showed several factors that offer hope to the challenger. About one-third of all Colorado voters are unaffiliated with a party and therefore play a huge role in any election. They are split nearly evenly, at 38 percent for Allard and 34 percent for Strickland.” (Rocky Mountain News, 7/25/02)

TENNESSEE: Despite Calls From Frist, GOP Stays Negative; Predictions of a Democratic Pickup
In the face of calls from Tennessee’s senior senator and NRSC chair to “tone down the rhetoric," Republican candidates in Tennessee continue to attack each other in the remaining days of the primary. "I have been active in trying to keep at least the Republican side in civil debate. I've only been marginally successful." said Frist last week in the midst of attack ads. The Republican infighting comes as Congressman Clement continues to focus on the issues and break fundraising barriers. Tom Humphrey of the Knoxville News Sentinel predicts, “Clement looks at that campaign as … a Democrat would like to see it, the corporate accountability scandals. And Lamar has had some business dealings in the past. He has sat on the boards of directors of a number of corporations, and some of his business dealings have been a bit questionable and controversial, historically speaking…. So I would say this is a good chance for a Democratic pickup.” (CNN’s Capital Gang, 7/27/02)

MAINE: GOP Financier Endorses Pingree for Stance on Corporate Accountability
Republican financer Robert Monks who ran against Susan Collins in the 1996 GOP primary has announced he will support former majority leader Chellie Pingree. Monks, a leading critic of corporate power and a supporter for shareholder rights has decided to back Pingree because he thinks the best chance for passing corporate reform laws is to have Democrats control Congress.” (AP, 7/29/02)
