Speaking of consequences, Self-Defeating Prophecy? The Tenuous Rise of the Greens: it's in their Hands, lays them somewhat forth. Point after point of common sense is made when Eli Beckerman deals with gun rights, abortion and drug laws. That fine-tuned nuance is bracketed though by fate, and then hope. It's... sort of more like a story with a happy ending than the real thing.
The fate that this sets in place a world in which the Democrats move further to the right, and the Greens' accusations of the rightward shift prove truer and truer seems so. For proof, look at what the social-conservative wingnuts are doing within the GOP. However, his conclusion that the Green Party carries a message of hope is awkward in it's basis. Sure, the 10 key values are priceless, real gems. But what about what the Nadarite Greens are actually doing. What about McGaa?
Self-labeled progressive Democrats like Paul Wellstone will find their base of support from right-of-Green folks out there -- folks who care about social justice AND "homeland security." Huh?!? Eli must not know that McGaa, as a Veteran of Korea (Corporal) and Vietnam (Captain), flew 110 Combat Missions, was a Marine Corps F-4 Fighter Pilot with Eight Air Medals, and awarded Two Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, supports rational military protection/retaliation to secure freedom from terrorism.
The Canadians, U.S. GREENS' BIG GOOF, will spell out what Beckerman only hints at in his intro:
Greens chose a native American, writer Ed "Eagle Man" McGaa, to run against Wellstone.
Apparently, Wellstone's unpardonable sin was to have supported the U.S. military action after September 11 and to have voted, along with 98 other senators, for the USA Patriot Act.
But here comes the really troubling part of this story. Green candidate McGaa, a veteran of both Korea and Vietnam, says he also supported a military response to last year's attacks and that he opposes the Green party's plank on the war against terrorism. In other words, the Greens -- in the name of principle -- are risking the defeat of the greenest member of the Senate by running a candidate who agrees with Wellstone on what the party evidently thinks is the make-or-break issue. Talk about not being ready for prime time.
