08/07/2002 Archived Entry: "New Cuomo & Old Laws"
Cuomo has done something admirable in his candidacy. I hope it helps his standing, because it would encourage other politicians to follow his lead. Juan Gonzalez, Cuomo boldly takes on drug laws thinks it will re-ignite his campaign. The War On Terror, to some extent, has been elevated to boogeyman status that politicians crave for cover, and this takes some of the sheen off the WOD. Compared to terrorists, that guy smoking a joint seems less important. The moral argument against drugs has always been weak. The fact is that incarcerating people over drug use has become a tremendous boon for making money off the government by a few. Lobbyist's in DC and state capitals represent strong institutional forces that are subsidized by the Gov't. It will take some time to wean the prison-welfare system off the taxpayers back. There's a fiscal argument to be made in favor of drug legalization beyond the savings that would appear due to decriminalization. Given the amount of revenue that could be generated at the state level with licences and heavily taxed drug use, some form of legalized drug use is favorable to the current street-status of the transaction. Good lead Cuomo.
