08/11/2002 Archived Entry: "Bush & Blair into Iraq"

Looking back on this post, Bush's War on Iraq, it seems I overestimated the depth of support for Iraqi adventures by the US under Bush. However, I was correct in surmising Blair's standing in relation to the invasion: An 'Unpopular Bush' poll puts pressure on Blair.

I think Blair will find it almost impossible to bring British public opinion around to the idea of invading Iraq. This is highly personal, but I don't know anybody that believes the situation in the Middle East will be improved by such an invasion.

If US invades Iraq, the oil spike will force all US airlines into bankruptcy, raise unemployment to rates unseen in twenty years and it would be the end of the Bush Presidency and perhaps the GOP for many years to come. These are some issues that the President may like to consider before taking further action.

Geez, G.C., when you put it that way -- that Invasion = End of Bush & GOP -- it almost persuades me to get behind an attack! ;o)
