08/11/2002 Archived Entry: "Bush's first Veto"
Armey Urges End to Cuba Sanctions. This is the one that Daschle should choose. Two weeks ago, the House adopted by a lopsided 262-167 vote a measure that would end restrictions on American travel to the island nation. Opening up Cuban mk'ts to the heartland farm states, in the middle of the Bush recession, is a priority of agribusiness, led by giant Archer-Daniels-Midland Co. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the president's brother, is facing reelection this fall in a state with a large bloc of Cuban American voters. If Daschle is able to marshall this through the Senate, Bush will veto the measure. In sticking by his brother --with a well-publicized first-veto-- Bush will be jepordizing a lot of farm state Republicans, especially in Iowa and South Dakota.

If we actually started traing with Iran, Iraq, Lybia, Cuba, etc. then our economy would register some improvment.
Democrats need to have a platform of fighting for smart trade policys.Force nation' like China to lower barriers and tariffs, and dont sell out the American people to butchers in Beijing.
Trade with EVERYBODY,but be tough.Dont play politics with trade,GOP mixes trade and foreign policy to suit themselves.GOP sells the farm in one instance and then does a total flip flop in another and actually cuts off trade with other nations people.

More fraudulent polling reported in Roll Call. One by American Viewpoint done for the GOP shows Cornyn eleven points ahead. Another done for Pryor shows him eight points ahead in Arkansas. Just like the economists have abdicated their responsibility in the recent financial crisis, the independent pollsters have abdicated their responsibility to set the record straight. I have always wondered why Mason-Dixon has not yet conducted any surveys in Texas and Arkansas.

I am staunchly pro-capitalist, and wish that some of our leaders (e,g, Duhbya) would be. "Sanctioning" off countries that pose NO MILITARY THREAT is not good for anyone's economy.
Bush, I believe, is in the Pat Buchanan's "moderate fascist" wing of the GOP. He wants to exercise total moral authority over the country, and wants also to limit free trade, and create a sort of government funded oligarchy of the major corporations that he likes, that will soon act as an unchecked fourth branch of government. He will skew capitalism with even more tariffs, perhaps even without political motivation like the ones on steel, and will give us a neo-Fascist dictatorship.

I am a staunch pro-capitalist as well. But, the GOP has not lived up to its billing. What a pity! If the GOP is serious about free trade, it should allow foreing financing of US airlines, which would go a long way in avoiding Chapter 11 bankruptcy such as the one by USAirways and perhaps by United Airlines in the near future. But, you are right. He wants to protect his incompetent friends in the steel, airline and farm industry, which does not augur well for the future of this country.
