08/29/2002 Archived Entry: "MA Gov & Statewide Poll"

Bolstered by support from women and independent voters, O'Brien now leads her closest rival, former US Labor secretary Robert Reich, 35 to 21 percent, according to the survey, conducted Sunday through Tuesday. Senate President Thomas F. Birmingham and former state senator Warren E. Tolman each received 15 percent in the poll.

No head-to-head numbers for O'Brien vs. Romney, but plenty of other good info, especially on the Lt. Gov race, which now looks like Romney will be teamed with Rappaport over Romney's choice of Healey--Among those who say they are definitely voting, his lead expands to 47 to 31 percent, the survey shows. If Romney gets the shaft from the GOP voters on his Lt Gov choice, what's that say about his chances in Nov? O'Brien, who will get her Lt Gov choice, may peak at just the right time to win.

Meanwhile, in Illinois, I am very happy to see another product of judicial incest (better known to the world as judicial elections) go down the tubes. This product of judicial incest better known as Ryan picked up two Hispanic men for a murder of a ten year old girl and got them convicted in order to win the elections in Napierville...eventually citizens of Illinois rewarded him by electing him an AG, thus perpetuating the incest. Now, finally, the Illinois citizens have realized their follies and Ryan is indeed trailing badly. Jim Ryan is as crooked as George Ryan, perhaps more so. After all George Ryan only tried to get kickbacks. Jim Ryan nearly murdered two innocent men, and would have gotten away with murder. I would hope that even in these days of corruption, the good citizens of Illinois do not want an attempted murderer as governor.

And if you do not believe the sorry story of this product of judicial incest known as Jim Ryan read the article below...how he tried the case when he was the DA in Dupage County, in a hurry perhaps in order to win an election. I have always believed that death penalty should be reserved for those cases with clear evidence. The problem is not DP but DAs such as Jim Ryan who are essentially products of judicial incest called judicial elections.

Speaking of Illinois, it looks as though Ryan will be left in the dust.

Survey USA is a questionable poll. They were wrong in 2002. But, based on other polls it is evident that Ryan is in serious trouble.

"Napierville" - G.C. Raj

No "i", please....

Sorry. I apologize. What are your views on the governor's race in Illinois. Some of my family members are going to be passing through O'Hare airport this evening, which I believe is close to Naperville. Isn't North-Central there? A chap from India I know is the Dean of Sciences at North-Central. Visited it once back in 1995.

I would be in NM and Colorado next week. Would be interested to find out what they really think out in the field.

G.C. Raj,
I live in Chicago. At this point, I don't see how Ryan can win this race. Illinois has been trending Democratic for a while and Ryan has too much baggage. The City and suburban Cook will vote overwhelmingly for Blagojevich. Ryan will win the Collar Counties, but not huge and I think downstate will be about 50/50. Blagojevich will take at least 55% of the vote.

I really don't know who to support in the primary. Liberal ideals push me towards Reich, Emily's List (which I am a supporter of)pushes me towards O'Brien, and Labor pushes me towards Birmingham. I've checked their websites, and they all seem to be comeptent candidates with the ability to be good Governors. Here's a question I would like as many people who are Democrats as possible to answer, if they could-who are you backing, and why? From your answers, maybe I could reach a decision. Why do I care? Well, my cousins live in Massachusetts, and they are Democrats-and they intend to vote in the primary. However, they don't know much about the race, so they're asking me (imagine-a 14-year old!)for advice on what to do. Thanks.

(Oh, and by the way-my aunt in Mass. says that from her observations, Romney will breeze to victory. I hope she's wrong)

In New Jersey news, Scott Garrett's campaign has used hit below the beltline with a negative attack on Sumers, criticizing her patriotism and her support for Israel. This is because of a forum posting by Sumers in 2000 at an International Aghan Forum for people who had previously lived in Afhganistan (Sumers did as a teenager, when her father worked there). Here is what Sumers said:

October 13, 2000 Posting Unedited

I am enjoying everyone's memories! We were in Kabul during the moon landing, and it seemed utterly unreal and impossible, surrounded by donkey herds carrying bricks, and jui dogs, and those poor skinny horses pulling carts, to look up and imagine astronauts on the moon. Speking of near-death experiences, by the way, I think my brother Rick Ricks and all of you in his roving motorcycle gang had a major death wish; he wiped out doing some sort of acrobatics on someone else's major motorcycle (he had more of a scooter), and tore his leg up, and you guys (George Earhardt, Marty Owens, et al) just moved your raucous cheerful party into his bedroom to help him recover. (Some of our nostalgia is for lost Afghanistan, and some of it is for our youth, which is just as lost. Still, I'd love to go back-AND STAY THERE, I THINK!). By the way, on a topical note: has anyone noticed that Israel is going to hell in a handbasket, and WWW III may be getting underway?
Anne Ricks Sumers

Now, the Garrett team added a line in that was not previously there, which is in bold. Also, considering that the war between Israel and the Palestinians was in full ignition mode in October 2000 (with the Cole sinking and all), her comments are reasonable, if not popular. Garrett uses those lines to claim that Sumers is hostile towards Israel, and a friend of the Palestinians. This is Sumers' response:

August 23, 2002
My opponent has decided to engage in the politics of destruction. He feels that rather than face up to his voting record in the Assembly, he should cast wild and unfounded accusations. While we generally ignore his wild accusations, he is now engaging in the hurtful exercise of “race politics”.

Scott Garrett and his supporters have distributed a portion of an e-mail I wrote in an effort to cast me as anything but Pro-Israel and insinuate that I may be Anti-Semitic. Nothing could be further from the truth.

My husband had relatives including his great grandparents who were murdered during the Holocaust. I have raised my two boys to understand and respect their rich Jewish heritage. We as a family have visited Israel and have witnessed first hand the challenges they face in protecting and securing their people. My family has proudly supported the United Jewish Appeal (UJA) for more than a decade.

At this critical point in Israel’s history, it is unfortunate that Scott Garrett would attempt to gain politically through such destructive and divisive methods. We should stand united behind Israel, our friend and ally, not divided.
Scott Garrett should apologize and cease this behavior.

(Sorry about the length, but there's no link for it, so I had to reproduce it in full)

I hope Dr. Sumers kick's Scott Garrett's a** across the district.

In other news, Tim Carden, who's running against Mike Ferguson in my district, got the endorsement of the UNITE Labor group in the district. Congressman Mike Honda is coming to help campaign with Tim, along with representatives from many Asian-American groups in New Jersey.

O'Hare is at the northwest tip of the city of Chicago. Naperville is about 35 miles west and the slightest bit south of Chicago.

Yes, North-Central is right downtown in Naperville.

From what I can tell, Ryan is toast.. I wouldn't even give better than 50/50 odds of him carrying the Collar Counties, which is where the GOP gets most of its votes in this state. I've already seen Blagojevich signs in Naperville, and no Ryan signs. This from a very GOP-friendly upscale yuppified community.

Yeah - CQ is on something. Hutchinson favored, KS Gov GOP favored, AL Gov Leans Dem, Hawaii Gov Leans Dem, TORRICELLI Favored. Maybe these are just very old.

In Mass, O'Brien is probably the best pooitician in the field. She has been timing her peak all along and is even doing it with her commercials. She will beat Romney. And she will really come on strong after she wins the primary. She comes from a long line of politicians (as you can tell from the name) and she specializes in making macho opponents look stupid. Romeny is a "sitting duck" for her. Now, will she make a good governor? Well.... But it will be good to have a governor who is a 'do something' executive, after so many years of 'do nothing' Republicans, riding high on the Clinton economy. And we will need a Deomcrat Governor, as O'Brien says to "clean up another Republican mess".

Posted by Andre @ 08/31/2002 08:13 PM PST

And the two Senators will do whatever they can to make sure there's a Dem Governor to appoint President Kerry's replacement in 2005.

Does ANYONE want to comment on my post on New Jersey? Anyone? Please?

(Seriously, though, I would appreciate a comment)

Posted by Mr. Liberal @ 09/01/2002 09:02 AM PST

Mr. Liberal-I'm in a good mood, so I'll comment.
I hope you're right about Summers. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if Roukema came out and endorsed her near the end. She obviously doesn't want Scott Garrett to win, and I think she just might do it as a last laugh at a party that has rewarded her for years of loyal service by stabbing her in the back.

You're saying that the Garrett campaign changed the email it got (How did it get a hold of that anyway?) and altered it to make it look worse? If that's what happened, he's in a lot of trouble. Something tells me that NJ voters are not happy with dishonest politicians.

Posted by JoeyJoeJoe @ 09/04/2002 07:50 AM PST

JoeyJoeJoe,

I really don't know for certain-what I wrote was the Sumers press release, including the actual post on that website. The Garrett press release had the line in bold "and stay there, I think!". I don't know who is being false. I shouldn't have said with certainty that Garrett's team added a line-for all I know now, the Sumers team could have subtracted a line. And I honestly can't tell you how they found the post, unless their opposition research team struck gold.

I jumped to conclusions with my commentary on the post. I apologize for that.

However, another fight is going on between the two camps on two fronts. The first front is about Sumers' TV ad-she stands in front of her delicatassen and says "I'm a small business owner". Only problem is, she sold the store a month after the ad was taped, and 3 days before the ad ran on TV. Garrett's now calling her a liar.

The other front is over an endorsement of Sumers from LiberalOasis.com, a group that, according to the Garrett team, is "Says we should be happy to pay taxes" and has links to liberals like Nader, Sharpton, Ted Kennedy and Jerry Brown. It has candidates endorsements who they have given money too also, including top Democratic candidates this year for Congress who are NOT liberal-like Ronnie Shows of Mississipi and Joe Turnham of Alabama. Garrett claims that since the website endorsed her, she must be...A LIBERAL! TA-DA! Sumers the extremist! Sumers could have let this one roll off her back, but made a very bad, amateur mistake. She had her campaign manager call the website owner and ask him to leave her name off the list. The website published a scathing editorial about her today, and Garrett excerpted it to his heart's desire:
http://www.LiberalOasis.com

(Note: It's on the center-left column, down a little, entitled-"Do Liberals have Cooties?")

Naturally, I'm also ticked off with Sumers. After all, the article makes valid points. The whole fracas now only hurts her, and takes the focus off Garrett's extremism. Still, the article does say that her idea is good-but her means don't justify the ends. Shame of you, Dr. Sumers-you have joined the millions of conservatives who seek to destory the ideas of the world known as liberalism.
