Senate Summary

Daily Kos has a good run-down on the US Senate races. There's nothing there to quibble with-- it's got the CW stamp of approval. Kos calls it a "10-state race." I'd make it an even dozen, including the Georgia race (with Cleland hinting at voting against the Iraq war):

But Cleland may have opened the door to Chambliss this weekend by telling a Georgia Democratic convention that the United States should not act unilaterally against Iraq. Although the general who endorsed Cleland, Gen. Wesley Clark, agrees with the senior senator, Clark isn’t running for re-election in a state solidly in Bush’s camp... Cleland tempered his comments this weekend with references to his own record of military service and past votes to support U.S. military action, but the gist of his remarks still questioned American policy. Cleland’s believed Achilles heel in the campaign is that he talks conservatively in Georgia but votes with the Democrats’ liberal wing in Washington.... And now this -- Cleland showing hesitancy in the war plans against Iraq. Republican TV ads explicitly questioning Democrats’ judgment in international affairs -- and perhaps implicitly questioning their patriotism -- are now running in a number of states. Will Cleland’s latest statements invite the same kind of attention here? It will be interesting to see how polls in this race look in a couple of weeks.... Some see Cleland agreeing with America’s reluctant allies as potentially an odd campaign strategy at this juncture.

I can't imagine Chambliss having the gall to question Cleland's patriotism, and I would imagine that Cleland will vote for the measure in the end. The other in the dozen is South Carolina, which the DSCC has some Frontline news on this week:

A recent poll in South Carolina shows Democratic candidate Alex Sanders gaining ground on Republican nominee Lindsey Graham. A poll conducted by Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group shows Sanders cutting Graham’s lead from 15 points in late August to only 8 points as of September 19. This improvement is credited to recent television ads that Sanders has been running highlighting the differences between himself and Graham on the important issue of Social Security privatization.

Graham has been running those anti-peace ads attacking Sanders for peace-supporter contributions, ala Cornyn attacking Kirk in Texas, and also attacking Sanders for his opposition to the death penalty. The war & death mongering by the Republicans has a shallow base of Armegeddon supporters-- Vote for me, I want to wage Global War and Execute others! It's real intent it to squelch growing momentum.
