New York Governor

This is a very interesting contest, with lots of angles of analysis. PW has a link to the recent Quinnipiac polling on the race: Republican Gov. George Pataki holds a 46 – 35 percent lead over State Comptroller H. Carl McCall among New York State likely voters, with 14 percent for Independence Party candidate Thomas Golisano. The poll does not include Cuomo, who will officially remain on the ballot as the Liberal Party candidate for governor.

The result shows a tightening of the race, with the recent Marist poll showing Pataki leading McCall and Golisano, 52-37-11. Joseph Mercurio, Campaign Insider, has some good articles on the race, especially regarding Golisano's impact. The Marist polling included Cronin (Right To Life) getting 2% as well as Aronowitz (Green) getting 2 percent. Cuomo needs to be kept in the polling. Marist wrote some interesting random notes on this election in the summer that are coming to pass:

This time, there is the Independence Party line and the Conservative Party endorsement – with Pataki and Golisano in competition. There is a Right-to-Life candidate [and a Green candidate]. Andrew Cuomo has the Liberal Party endorsement. Carl McCall is the candidate of the Working Families Party. You get the idea. Scorecards are available as you leave he room. Bottom line, with the breakdown of party loyalty, there are a growing number of voters who might choose to vote on the minor party line. This all creates a tinge of uncertainty to the election.
