Israel Update 3 weeks out

Amidst another bombing, it's unclear whether this will stem the slide that the Likud has been on:

Several weekend polls indicate that Likud is continuing to be hurt by allegations of organized crime involvement and corruption in the party's Nov. 28 primary.

One survey, in the Yediot Ahronot daily, showed Likud would win 32 seats in Israel's 120-seat parliament, down from 35 a week earlier. Mitzna's Labor party remained a steady second, winning 22 seats, compared to 21 the previous week's poll. Before the corruption allegations, some polls had given Likud about 40 seats.

Fewer seats for Likud will mean greater difficulty for Sharon in forming a government. If Labor refuses to join a coalition, Sharon will have to form a partnership with smaller ultranationalist parties. Such an alliance would likely give him a majority in parliament but would be very unstable.

Thanks for the link, mydd. I thought that Mitzna's goose was cooked, but hopefully Labour can run strongly enough to forge a moderate coalition (25-30 seats would be enough). It seems as if Sharon's problems are with scandals in his administration. In that case, it's time for Israel to clean out the cobwebs and bring in fresh leadership. I'd provide a link to Mitzna's website, but the site is in Hebrew (and in 6 years of Hebrew School, they never taught us to speak it).

Mydd, what's your take on the recent 2004 events in politics so far?

Finally, a tidbit from Arizona. Several conservative PAC's, including the Club for Growth, are now trying to recruit Congressman Jeff Flake to run for the US Senate. This would be in a primary against Senator John McCain. Apparently, these groups want a more conservative and loyal Senator to side with them.

Obviously, this is part of the movement in the Republican party to retire and replace all those Senators who don't agree with them on the issues entirely.

Maybe if they force McCain out in Arizona we can get him to run for the Presidency for the Dems

Or, maybe if they force McCain out there will be enough bad blood with the moderates to elect a Democrat...
