A Political Warrior

Hell yea,

South said he most wants the chance to battle Bush, "the first president in my lifetime I don't have an ounce of respect for. I have told Gray one of the reasons I don't want to stay involved on a day- to-day basis is that . . . I'm going to bash Bush, and you're probably not going to like what I have to say," he said.

...Phil Trounstine, Davis' former director of communications, said one of South's strengths is that his tough perspective comes from outside Washington's political circles.

"Garry is not a (Washington, D.C.) beltway guy, and doesn't have a beltway mentality -- but a curbside mentality," Trounstine said. "That makes him extremely valuable to the Democrats nationally."

South says the scuffle against Bush is "personal."

"California is Karl Rove's Holy Grail," he said. "Bush came out here and tried to do (win) it in 2000 . . . . Bring him out again. He doesn't really scare me."

...Of his own contributions, South was uncharacteristically reserved. "I'm a political warrior, not a policy wonk. And no one, to my knowledge, has ever accused me of being nonpartisan."

Where do you think he winds up?

If he can get Gray Davis re-elected, let's use him for everything he's got.

Hmm, South is enough of a pragmatist that he's going to go with someone toward the center. I'm guessing he lands with Graham, or Clark if he runs.

South is vicious and takes no prisoners. That's exactly the kind of person we need, especially in an environment where the right-wing media is out for blood every day and the allegedly liberal mainstream media is in Bush's pocket.

I agree with you CADem. We need someone like South in 2004 to battle the Republican ticket. He did an excellent job saving Davis from defeat, first by taking on Riordan in the primary and relentlessly going negative on Simon.
